Summary: Information on smart metering systems with particular emphasis on the benefits resulting from their implementation and concerns arising in the design and selection of components are shortly summarized in the paper. Presents the potential for reducing the risk of illegal energy consumption and possible damage of a meter by the use of electronic smart energy meters. It is also stated in connection with the adoption by Poland Directive of the European Parliament and of the Council on measuring instruments, the legal basis for the conformity assessment of electricity meters and their legal metrological control.
